Episode 045- Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey

Meet Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey

Today we are delighted to have the authors of The Enigma Series discuss the basis of computers and security today which started with the World War II enigma encryption machine. This is not only the foundation of the series, but the springboard into the moral structure of the R-Group that was founded by members who escaped Poland into Switzerland.

To help clarify, this is not a boring history lesson on WWII, but rather a way to explain not only how technology began, then to also discuss how dependent we are now on technology for everyday living. The R-Group is a family owned and managed entity that provides state-of-the art technology insights and analytics to even world government agencies. This team provides the details in a behind the scenes way that allows you to see how much technology can help or hurt people today.

Our guests will help you decide how much technology may be enough in our daily lives while also weaving in the human characters that make you want to read and listen to these stories. Let’s put our hands together and welcome Breakfield and Burkey to share their insights to the newest story in the series.

Episode 046- Nkege Yasin

Meet Nkege Yasin>

Learning How, owned by Nkenge Yasin, is a newly-launched child care institution and state-of-the-art academic learning facility offering hands-on experiences through purposeful play in Baltimore, Maryland. We currently utilize the latest technology to engage the whole family in a child’s growth, while offering practical services that meet the entire family’s needs. All of this happens in a space that is welcoming and inviting to youth and parents alike. We recognize each individual as a capable person deserving support, respect and acceptance as we work together to create a welcoming community atmosphere.

With this in mind, we envision a child development center that empowers children and families collaboratively. The Center will develop trust with a caring attitude combined with professional expertise that allow us to understand each child’s stage of development.

The child/infant care industry is already a relatively mature industry, where various segments have developed quite well, including parent-child classes, early childhood education, K-12 quality education and training, etc. This is called “the red ocean market”. To be specific, Cut-throat competition in existing industries turns the ocean bloody red. Hence the term “red ocean”. Red ocean strategy is all about competition. As the market space gets more crowded, companies compete fiercely for a greater share of limited demand. Competing in red oceans is a zero-sum game. A market-competing strategy divides existing wealth between rival companies. As competition increases, prospects for profit and growth decline.

However, Learning How chooses a contrary business strategy by targeting a niche market, providing unique services and experiences that will differentiate us from our competitors to develop a “blue ocean strategy”. We select the peak time, ideal place, and right positioning, to develop uncontested market space rather than fight over a shrinking profit pool. To be specific, Learning How eliminates homogeneous services brought about by standardized operations in the existing market, raises the possibility of customized service by incorporating the latest technology and research with familial support, reduces the cost of large-scale expansion and replication business models, and creates the first premium child/infant care centers in targeted neighborhood. There is ample opportunity for growth that is both profitable and rapid.

With our talented team of experienced professionals and educators, we believe we will be able to make a large impact in the child/infant care industry specifically as a solution to addressing one of Baltimore’s many challenges. There is a great opportunity to capitalize on the current differentiated market for Learning How in Maryland, and we aim to gain a large portion of that market.

I have over 17 years in the Child Development industry and have successful grown from a family childcare as the sole proprietor to now a Child Development Center with 5 employees including myself.

Episode 055- Brian Meshkin

Meet Brian Meshkin

King interviews founder and social impact investor Brian Meshkin

Meet Brian Brian Meshkin's life journey has involved service. A native son of Howard County, Maryland – a small, caring community tucked between the two big cities of Baltimore and Washington, DC - Brian now calls southern California home. Like all fathers, Brian is so proud of his three kids.

Like many of us, it was in his home and neighborhood growing up where Brian gained a strong appreciation for sacrifice and hard work. His mother - an educator - was raised by a Catholic widowed single mother, who instilled a strong sense of family and determination, when faced with challenges. His mom and grandma told him their stories of struggle; and this gave him a deep appreciation for the opportunities Brian had growing up – with both a mom and dad at home, a great public school system, and the opportunity to go to college.

Some entrepreneurs start their first business when they’re 13. Though Brian didn’t start a business then, his social entrepreneurship did start then, as he developed a commitment to making a difference at 13 years of age. Following the tragic death of a friend, Chris Kelley, who was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in front of Brian’s home, Brian realized that life was truly a gift, and a community could come together during a difficult time, and anyone could make a difference. As a student at Glenwood Middle School, Brian led the legislative committee of a student project to pass the nation’s first bicycle helmet law for children under 16 years of age in Howard County. This experience ignited Brian’s passion for helping others and solving difficult problems. Throughout high school, Brian continued to testify and lobby for similar legislation protecting children across the U.S. Brian still believes in our ability to come together during difficult times to solve problems with collaborative leadership. Brian’s passion for making a difference and commitment to entrepreneurial innovation all go back to this defining moment.

Today as a father of three teenagers, Brian’s commitment is deeper than ever. He understands the hardships faced by parents trying to raise a family, as well as the joys of parenthood. Brian is active in his community, having been PTA President at his children’s school, serving as a youth sport coach for his sons’ basketball and baseball teams, an announcer for his daughter’s swim meets, having served on numerous non-profit boards, and serving four years as an elected member of his countywide Board of Education. He is a huge sports enthusiast and die-hard fan of the Washington Football Team. He is a Christian and an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he provides volunteer service. Brian defines his life by his faith in God and belief that every person on earth is a child of God with a divine heritage and potential.

Through the 1990s he was the #2 executive at The Carlton Group, Ltd., a well-known real estate investment banking firm.

There he helped start the firm’s real estate financing division, which as of today has financed $157 billion in transactions. Along with his mother, Eric converted 1100 apartments into co-operatives and condominiums during the 1980s. From 1996-2002, Eric acted as a real estate advisor to the Collegiate Church Corporation, the U.S.’s oldest corporation, founded in 1696.

He has an A.B. from Vassar College and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School. In December 2016, the NRF published A Call to Action: How to Save Millions of Lives, a climate change primer that advocates building outside of flood and drought areas. The Awakening Trilogy was written from 2019 to 2021 as a sci-fi romance series and presents a worldview of life 60 years into the future. In October 2022, he self-published, under the pen name, A.H. Prouty, Radushka: The Maelstrom, a dark political novel set in Beverly Hills, California.

My current passion is to finance as much renewable energy as possible for the next several years. Projects are $10 million to $1 billion+. Approved projects are strongly preferred but the NRF will consult, for a mutually agreeable donation, to help achieve approvals, in select circumstances. Eric also gives talks about sustainability, resilience, and regenerative techniques to help decarbonize and improve our environment. These talks can help municipalities, universities, schools, companies, and hospitals achieve their decarbonization goals.

Episode 058- Larry Paul

Meet Larry Paul

King interviews Venture Capitalist Larry Paul

Larry “King” Paul was born and raised in Trenton New Jersey. Larry is an entrepreneur in the city of Trenton, New Jersey today, helping to fight against the toughest kinds of poverty; Homelessness, drug addiction, abandoned/dilapidated property, gang violence, and community ownership.

In 2014 Larry became a foster parent for the Devereux Foundation and knew that his life mission was to help people who struggled with their mental and emotional health. After working with the youth for 5 years Larry switched his focus to helping put adults in better situations because he found the parent’s trauma affected the children more than their own trauma.

In 2020 Larry and a group of 11 friends started a nonprofit called Culture Change. Today Larry spends most of his time helping with the rebuilding efforts for downtown Trenton NJ. Creating partnerships in the community between organizations that are focused on helping the same group of people to do events together to make a bigger impact in the community because strategic partnerships are how we will move forward together.

Larry graduated from Kaplan University (now Purdue University Global) with an associate's degree in accounting. Which he has used to help do taxation accounting but also helps in getting new entrepreneurs to understand how to separate their personal and business finances and account for their businesses properly. Larry’s life goal now is to help end poverty mentally, financially, and emotionally in communities of need.

Mental poverty is not having enough information or skill to succeed in life, financial poverty is not having enough money to live comfortably in life, and emotional poverty is when you don’t feel good about who you are, what you are doing, or the people you’ve surrounded yourself with, in your life. There are 4 pillars of success that will make this dream a reality and that’s operating with accountability, responsibility, respect, and unity. Practicing these pillars on a consistent basis with every person you come into contact with is how Larry believes poverty will be defeated.
